UP Future Library and Information Professionals of the Philippines
Using the Tools of the Trade

2010.06.19 - In cooperation with the General Reference section of the University Library, the UP FLIPP facilitated a Library Orientation activity for the newly accepted students of the School of Library and Information Studies. Familiarizing the students with the materials essential to their academics - and where to find them - is the goal of this endeavor.

The library tour started off with a short talk about the General Reference section by the reference librarian accompanying the group. This included a description of the old card catalog and also of the virtual tour system. A brief slideshow explaining basic use of resources as well as various research options available in the library was also presented.

The next stop was the Filipiniana Serials and Special Collections section wherein the group was exposed to the library’s collection of Filipiniana serials. The somewhat antiquated computer cataloging system, which uses the text-based CDS/ISIS software developed by UNESCO, was also touched upon. The University Archives and Records Depository, a section which students cannot usually access, was also opened for the tour. This section proved to be a treasure trove of our country's - and the University's - heritage.

The new students also got to set foot at the basement level where the Filipiniana collection is located. Also in this level are the Filipiniana serials, women's rights, and human rights sections. The tour of the Main Library was then followed by a tour of the SLIS library headed by none other than SLIS Head Librarian Sol Fonseca, with the help of UP FLIPP members.

The library orientation activity is proof of our continuing commitment to lending a helping hand to new students of the School of Library and Information Studies.

2010.06.14 -  The UP FLIPP held its reorientation activity to instill among its members the mission, vision and objectives that the organization espouses.

For this activity, the Internal Affairs committee put together a bunch of games and activities that reimagined the various facets of the organization and presented them in an enjoyable and educational way. The “Dugtungan Game” by  Internal VP Angel  Fernandez emphasized the history of UP FLIPP while the “Skit Game” by Orly Putong exemplified the UP FLIPP’s Constitution. For the physical activities, the “Candle Game” by Chad Diaz showed the organization’s VMOPS (Vision, Mission, Objectives, Purpose) while Miki Arispe's “Agawan Base” displayed each committee’s task designations and also their respective heads’ leadership skills. Rounding out the rest of the day were Daphne Fe’s “Human Bingo” and Rej Itang’s “Charades” both of which expounded on the R-E-L-A-T-I-O-N-S-H-I-P-S slogan.

The successful activity was capped off with a reflection session. The reorientation is proof of our commitment to strengthening relationships among members and keeping the organization as a whole in line with its principles and objectives.

Welcoming this year's freshmen

JUNE 9, 2010 - The UP School of Library and Information Studies communities gathered once again to welcome this year's batch of new students.

Dean Vyva Aguirre kicked off the event with an opening message, followed by talks on career opportunities and life at the College by SLIS alumnus Joel Buenrostro and Student Council chairperson Krizia Almenario, respectively. After a short primer on the basic services offered by the Office of Counseling and Guidance, the three students organizations within the College were given the opportunity to introduce themselves. The UP FLIPP provided a glimpse of its identity and what's in store through an enthralling multimedia presentation. The event was concluded by the closing remarks delivered by Professor Johann Frederick Cabbab, then capped off with the singing of the UP Naming Mahal.

The SLIS Freshman Welcome Program, held on the first day of classes every academic year, aims to orient new students on life at the College and make them feel at home.

Site refresh

The UP FLIPP website has just been updated. Version 1.9 addresses issues on site display and content organization, and will be the last major update before Version 2, which is slated for a June 2011 launch.

A new look
The new theme continues the minimalist design tradition and offers a fresher, cleaner look for a great surfing experience. We did not stop at ironing out flaws in text formatting and alignment; we also removed unnecessary modules for a less cluttered homepage. The gallery page overlap problem has been sorted out as well.

Meet the Time Machine
The Time Machine is the site's new archives section, housing articles spanning the site's two years of existence. We've arranged them by academic year for easy access. And just to mention; we've also done some work on the LibSpeak section, but there isn't much to see yet - until August, that is.

Better Content Organization

Content groups and menu hierarchies have been rebuilt from the ground up, ensuring easier site navigation and hassle-free content management. The revamped menu bar not only loads faster, but is also leaner than in the previous version. The site's features are now just a click away.

What's next?

As mentioned at the beginning of the article Version 2, or "Bloomfield" as it is codenamed, is just around the corner. Bloomfield
will run on a newer version of the Joomla! website system, and will come with a powerhouse set of features aimed towards increased multimedia integration, adoption of the latest Web standards, and compatibility with mobile devices. It won't be coming till June 2011, but we're thinking of having a public beta ready later this year. Stay tuned for updates.

There you have it; the new and improved UPFLIPP.org. If you find anything that's not quite right, please send a message to lighthouse220 AT gmail DOT com.
